On the morning of 13 June 2026, a gentle rain fell over Adelaide, bringing a fresh and tranquil atmosphere to the early winter day. Amid the cheerful laughter echoing through Adelaide Zoo, dozens of young students with a passion for the Chinese language gathered together to take part in the Final Showcase of the 6th South Australia Chinese Bridge Chinese Competition for Primary School Students. Through their voices, they shared the beauty of the Chinese language, and through their performances, they showcased the richness of Chinese culture, shining brightly on stage with confidence and enthusiasm.
This year’s competition marked the second time that South Australia has hosted the prestigious Chinese Bridge Primary School Competition for students aged 13 and under, bringing together some of the state’s most outstanding young Chinese language learners from a range of primary and secondary schools. Following a highly competitive selection process, seven exceptional finalists advanced through multiple rounds to earn their place on the grand stage of the Final Showcase, where they demonstrated their passion for Chinese language and culture.
These young participants have dedicated themselves to the study of Chinese with remarkable enthusiasm and perseverance. On today’s stage, they shone with confidence, demonstrating their language skills through fluent and authentic Chinese, as well as a wide range of impressive performances. Their presentations showcased the achievements of overseas youth in learning Chinese and reflected their genuine appreciation for and fascination with the richness of Chinese culture.
The 6th South Australia Chinese Bridge Chinese Competition for Primary School Students was proudly supported and jointly organised by the Centre for Language Education and Cooperation, the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Adelaide, and the Australia-China Cultural Exchange Association, among other supporting organisations.
The event brought together a distinguished panel of judges and an impressive lineup of guests from various sectors. Representatives from the education, cultural, and community fields gathered to encourage and support young Chinese language learners, while witnessing the meaningful connections and cultural exchange fostered between Australia and China through the Chinese language.
Following a draw to determine the performance order, the first finalist to take the stage was Sebastian Michael from Pulteney Grammar School. Through his presentation, Hong Kong – A City of Charm, Sebastian introduced the audience to the unique character and vibrancy of Hong Kong. His clear, confident, and fluent Chinese demonstrated a strong command of the language and reflected the dedication behind his studies.
In the talent showcase segment, Sebastian delivered an energetic and powerful Chinese drum performance. The resounding drumbeats and dynamic rhythms captivated the audience, filling the venue with excitement and showcasing the strength, spirit, and cultural richness of traditional Chinese performing arts.
第2组登场的是来自Plympton International College的Imogen Hughes-Wright，为大家讲述了家喻户晓的巾帼英雄故事《花木兰》，娓娓道来花木兰忠孝两全、勇敢坚毅的传奇经历，传递中华传统美德。随后她倾情演唱《雪绒花》，歌声温柔治愈，舞台表现力十足。
Group 2 featured Imogen Hughes-Wright from Plympton International College. Through her presentation on Mulan, she vividly shared the story of the legendary heroine renowned for her courage, loyalty, and determination. Her speech highlighted the traditional Chinese values of filial piety, bravery, and selflessness. In the talent segment, Imogen performed the classic song Edelweiss, captivating the audience with her gentle and heartfelt singing, as well as her confident stage presence.
第3组选手是来自Prince Alfred College 的 Seb Henderson，带着厚重的历史故事登台，深情讲述《屈原的故事》，带领大家重温传统历史典故，感悟古人的家国情怀。而他的才艺剑舞《刀剑如梦》更是惊艳全场，动作行云流水、气势飒爽，刚柔并济的舞姿尽显国风少年意气，瞬间点燃现场氛围。
Group 3 featured Seb Henderson from Prince Alfred College. In his speech, The Story of Qu Yuan, Seb shared the life and legacy of one of China’s most revered historical figures, guiding the audience through a classic tale of patriotism and cultural heritage. In the talent segment, he performed a traditional sword dance to Dream of Swords and Blades, impressing the audience with his smooth movements, confident stage presence, and the elegance and strength of Chinese martial arts-inspired performance.
第4组是来自Plympton International College 的 Ella Muratovski，分享主题为《神奇的汉字》，她细致解读汉字的形态之美、寓意之妙，让在场观众感受到方块字的独特魅力。极具亮点的是她的古筝独奏表演，悠扬古朴的琴声缓缓流淌，古韵十足，将中华传统民乐的雅致风韵完美呈现。
Group 4 featured Ella Muratovski from Plympton International College. Her presentation, The Magic of Chinese Characters, explored the beauty and meaning behind Chinese characters, offering the audience a glimpse into the uniqueness of the Chinese writing system. In the talent segment, Ella performed a traditional guzheng solo. The elegant and melodic sounds of the instrument created a captivating atmosphere, beautifully showcasing the charm of traditional Chinese music.
第5组是来自Pulteney Grammar School 的 Abigail Roy，以《哈尔滨》为主题展开分享，视角新颖、表达流畅，生动展现中国城市文化魅力。最让人眼前一亮的是她的舞狮才艺表演，灵动活泼的动作、喜庆热闹的氛围，将中国传统民俗文化的魅力展现得淋漓尽致。
Group 5 featured Abigail Roy from Pulteney Grammar School. Her presentation on Harbin offered a fresh and engaging perspective on one of China’s most distinctive cities, highlighting its rich culture and unique character. In the talent segment, Abigail delighted the audience with a lively lion dance performance. Her energetic movements and vibrant stage presence brought the festive spirit of this traditional Chinese art form to life, showcasing the charm and excitement of Chinese folk culture.
第6组是来自Walford Anglican School for girls 的 Taylor Dean，以真挚的口吻分享了《我和中文的“较量”》，娓娓讲述自己学习中文的趣味历程与成长感悟，字字真诚、感染力十足。随后，她带来经典曲目《中国话》演唱，清脆童声婉转悠扬，完美诠释出中文的韵律之美，收获现场阵阵掌声。
Group 6 featured Taylor Dean from Walford Anglican School for Girls. In her presentation, My Journey with the Chinese Language, Taylor shared her experiences, challenges, and achievements in learning Chinese with sincerity and enthusiasm. Her heartfelt storytelling resonated with the audience and reflected her genuine passion for the language. In the talent segment, she performed the popular Chinese song Chinese Language (中国话). Her clear and melodious singing beautifully captured the rhythm and charm of the Chinese language, earning warm applause from the audience.
第7组是来自Pulteney Grammar School 的 Amy Lyttle，以灵动的表达，为大家全方位介绍北国冰城《哈尔滨》，分享城市特色与人文风情，让现场观众足不出澳，领略中国城市的独特风貌。后续的现场汉字书写展示，一笔一画工整端正，尽显扎实的中文学习功底。
Group 7 featured Amy Lyttle from Pulteney Grammar School. In her presentation on Harbin, Amy introduced the audience to the unique charm of this northern Chinese city, sharing its distinctive culture, landmarks, and local traditions. Her engaging delivery allowed the audience to experience the character of Harbin without leaving Australia. In the talent segment, Amy demonstrated her Chinese writing skills through a live Chinese character writing display. Her neat and confident handwriting reflected the dedication and effort she has put into learning the Chinese language.
Following the completion of all performances, the finalists eagerly awaited the results while a number of distinguished guests took the stage to share their remarks and congratulate the students on their outstanding achievements.
Mr Wang Hongsun, Deputy Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Adelaide, noted that Chinese Bridge is one of the world’s most influential Chinese language and cultural exchange programs. He highlighted that this was the second time South Australia had hosted a dedicated competition for students aged 13 and under, and praised the high standard of this year’s showcase. He commended the participants for demonstrating impressive Chinese language proficiency and a genuine appreciation of Chinese culture. Mr Wang encouraged the students to continue their Chinese language studies and expressed his hope that they would one day visit China, experience its culture firsthand, and further deepen their understanding of the country.
Mr Chad Crittle, Director of Adelaide Zoo, also extended his congratulations on the successful staging of the event. He praised the students for their confidence and talent on stage, and commended their enthusiasm for learning Chinese and exploring Chinese culture. Mr Crittle expressed his hope that opportunities such as the Chinese Bridge competition would continue to foster multicultural exchange and provide young people with more platforms to learn, connect, and showcase their abilities.
Ms Becky Houston, representing the South Australian Multicultural Commission, delivered an inspiring address following the performances. As a judge for this year’s competition, she had the opportunity to witness firsthand the students’ dedication, growth, and remarkable talents throughout the event. She expressed how impressed and proud she was of each participant’s achievements.
Ms Houston noted that Chinese culture is an important and valued part of Australia’s multicultural society. She praised the Chinese Bridge competition for its rich and engaging program, highlighting its role in promoting cultural understanding and strengthening connections between communities. She also expressed her hope that South Australia will continue to host similar cultural events in the years ahead, allowing multiculturalism to flourish and bringing people from diverse backgrounds together through shared learning and appreciation.

Following careful deliberation by the judging panel, the winners of this year’s competition were officially announced. Each award represented the students’ hard work, dedication, and perseverance throughout their Chinese language learning journey.
The recipient of the First Prize was Taylor Dean from Walford Anglican School for Girls. Her outstanding Chinese presentation, confident stage presence, and impressive talent performance earned unanimous praise from both the judges and the audience, securing her the championship title of the 6th South Australia Chinese Bridge Competition for Primary School Students. Taylor will also have the honour of representing South Australia at the upcoming Chinese Bridge Global Finals in China.

The Third Prize was awarded to three outstanding finalists from Pulteney Grammar School: Amy Lyttle, Abigail Roy, and Sebastian Michael. Through their impressive Chinese presentations and engaging talent performances, they demonstrated strong language skills, confidence, and a genuine enthusiasm for Chinese culture, earning well-deserved recognition from the judging panel.
The remarkable achievements of these young participants would not have been possible without the dedication and guidance of their teachers. Every confident speech, every polished performance, and every step of progress reflected the patience, encouragement, and hard work of the educators who supported them along the way.
In recognition of their invaluable contributions, the organisers presented Certificates of Outstanding Guidance and commemorative gifts to all participating teachers. This special gesture served as a heartfelt tribute to their commitment to Chinese language education and their unwavering support in nurturing the next generation of Chinese language learners.
The successful delivery of the 6th South Australia Chinese Bridge Competition for Primary School Students was also made possible by the dedication and hard work of a team of committed volunteers. From coordinating rehearsals and guiding participants, to assisting with score tabulation and maintaining the smooth operation of the event, volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure every aspect of the showcase ran seamlessly.
In recognition of their valuable contributions, distinguished guests were invited to present Certificates of Appreciation to the volunteers, expressing sincere gratitude for their dedication, service, and support throughout the event.
